What is an ATIXA resource or tool that has aided you in your Title IX work?
The Member Library and the ListServ have been equally invaluable to me in my work as a Title IX Coordinator. The publications have been (and continue to be) a great resource as the field continues to evolve. ATIXA’s new regulation implementation documents, checklists, and templates (TIXKit) have alleviated some of the angst I initially experienced regarding the implementation process.
What is one way you practice self-care doing such intensive work?
Some of the self-care options previously available to me (spa treatments, movies, travel) have been curtailed because of COVID-19. Prayer remains constant. Beyond that, I have learned to substitute the spa treatments with cooking, walking, and genealogy research. Walking at least once daily without distractions (music, audiobooks, etc.), has allowed me to perform a reset. The morning walk allows me to focus on the tasks ahead. I’ve recently added an evening walk, which enables me to decompress and transition from work life to home life formally.
What is one piece of advice you would offer your fellow practitioners?
The adage is true, “Work smarter, not harder.” Stay connected (or get connected) to the listserv; it can be your “lifeline”! You will discover you’re not alone, and more importantly, you’ll find you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Someone else has experienced a similar problem or needed (and has already created) the same template you were struggling to design…and they are willing to share!
