50th Anniversary of Title IX
ATIXA and the Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) hosted a Congressional briefing on June 14, 2022. This briefing marked the 50th Anniversary of Title IX and discussed the current state of Title IX and the challenges on the horizon for Title IX coordinators. The panel was made up of Congressional Title IX champions, including Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA), Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), Rep. Deborah Ross (D-NC), and ATIXA’s Member of Congress Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA), plus a video message from Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI). By all accounts, the briefing was a major success! Staff from 55 Congressional offices attended and over 200 ATIXA members joined virtually to watch the proceedings. A recording of the briefing can be viewed here.
Student Loan Deferment for Victims of Sexual Violence Act
Furthermore, Rep. Dean used the briefing as an opportunity to announce the introduction of the ATIXA-inspired Student Loan Deferment for Victims of Sexual Violence Act (H.R. 7980). As mentioned in previous Policy Corners, H.R. 7980 directs the U.S. Department of Education to create a federal financial aid repayment deferment for victims of sexual violence who temporarily withdraw from college in order to seek treatment and focus on their mental and physical health rehabilitation.
We encourage all ATIXA members to reach out to their Representative and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 7980. Your voice matters to members of Congress and can make a real difference! For your convenience, ATIXA has created a member activation page with a sample email draft and all the information you need to reach out to your Representative.
